Variety reports that Michael Mann, director of Heat, Last of the Mohicans, and um, Miami Vice (I hear the Director Cut is better) is set to direct a depression-era crime drama, “Public Enemies.”  Enemies will star Johnny Depp as the countries most notorious gangster John Dillinger.  Christan Bale (everyone’s new goodguy) as Melvin Purvis, an agent in the newly formed FBI, leading a manhunt for Dillinger.

Other notables in Eneimes are; the always solid Giovanni Ribisi as Alvan Kappis.  Giovanni is also in James Cameron’s new one “Avatar“ (can’t wait for that one).  Relative new comer, Channing Tatum as Pretty Boy Floyd.  The consummate creep, Stephen Dorff is close to signing a deal to play Homer Van Meter.  And Jason Clark will play John “Red” Hamilton.

Mann is one of my favorite directors, Miami Vice was a disaster (but even Tom Brady throws the occasional interception) and I’m sure he’ll be right back in the saddle with “Public Enemies.”  Everyone loves a good gangster movie, and with Mann helming that cast, it can’t miss.  Can it?
