Lego is looking to up-seat Hasbro as the leader in toy sales 2008. Hasbro stocked, and re-stocked the shelves last year, with much help from the summer blockbuster “Transformers.” This year, as reported by Marc Graser at Variety, it looks as if Hasbro will dominant the Hollywood toy tie-in race. Hasbro is producing this summers ”Speed Racer” film directed by the Wachowski brothers. Speed is a movie that has obvious toy tie-ins, you know your gonna buy the new “Mach 5.” Along with Speed, Lego also has the rights to the new Lucas/Spielberg’s opus “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull,” and both “Star Wars” and the first three Indiana films. Even with no new “Stars Wars” projects hitting, the company is strill showing growth.
Vidgames are one of the biggest reasons. The Lego “Star Wars” games have sold an estimated 15 millions copies to date. Lego is looking to produce similar games for “Indiana Jones” and “Batman.” The “Batman” games will not use Nolans depiction of that universe do to its edgy nature according to Jill Wilfert, VP of licensing and entertainment for Lego.
Along with these Lego also has “Harry Potter” and “Sponge Bob.” All house hold names. Looks to be a good year for that building block company.
